Not much, really

So, not much has been going on lately...nothing really to blog about. In fact, I haven't even finished another book. I am currently working my way through I am Charlotte Simmons, but it is not terribly engaging, but is rather long winded. It's an okay book...just long. I need to finish it by Saturday to stay up-to-date with my 50 Books goal.

I met my new neighbors, Adam and Annie, tonight. They moved into the house formerly known as "Crackhead Kyle's". You might remember, they are they ones who stole my electricity and then ">wanted the extension cord back. They seem like a nice, quiet family. I was telling them that as long as they're quiet we'll get along great. Annie said, "Umm, well, we have a 3 year old."

Me: Oh, 3 year old noise is not a problem. Welding in your front yard at 3 a.m. is a problem, turning your stereo up loud enough to shake my doors is a problem. A 3 year old....do they make noise? No I don't think so.

They both looked both astonished and laughed. Like I said, I think we'll get along fine.

Birthdays, Bombings, Nazis and Popes

Today is F’s birthday. I work with F and he and I have had many, many discussions about religion and its differences. F is Catholic (at one point he considered entering the Seminary) and I (as you know) am pseudo-Mormon.

F is also German; he pointed out the fact that he shares a birthday with Hitler, a fact which, I hope he’s not proud of, but he grew up in a totally different socio-political climate when it comes to the Nazis.

April 19th is also the day the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995, the Waco disaster in 1993, Columbine happened just one day later in 1999 and the Elian Gonzalez stand-off ended in 2000. He also pointed out that Nostradamus believed April 19th to be an unlucky (catastrophic) day.

So, he was hoping for some good news this year. Hopefully, he got it with the announcement of the election of Pope Benedict XVI, a fellow German and traditionalist.

Big brother and sister: Kenna looks a little unsure about this new brother, but I think she's excited. If you are thinking they look more Asian than Irish, it's because their mother is Korean.

Wind in the Willows

Wind is my least favorite weather phenomenon, and yesterday it was really, really windy. We actually had a high wind warning until 10:00 pm, but the wind was howling long past that.

My house creaks and shakes...I've lost some shingles...For whatever reason I just find wind very disturbing...I can't sleep when the wind is blowing...

In Utah, we get "micro-bursts". Very strong tornado force winds (but usually no tornado) for a brief period of time. Trees are uprooted, cars blown over, obviously a lot of damage to structures. My sister-in-law actually had a tree fall on her during one of these micro-bursts. I wonder if her terror of the wind transferred to me while she lived with me.

Regardless, give me snow, rain, hail, sleet, sun, it doesn't matter...as long as it doesn't include wind.

50 Books

Over the weekend I finished:

Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult. I loved this book. It has a very similar feel to My Sister's Keeper : A Novel which is one of my top 10 favorite books. It is the story of a woman who learns that her perfect father kidnapped her 28 years ago. He is arrested and sent back to Arizona to face charges. What do you do when you discover your life has been a lie? Great book! 418 pages

Just this morning I finished Alone by Lisa Gardner. I've never read her before and don't think I will again. It was an okay novel, it started out promising, but in the end it was confusing, disappointing and unresolved. 324 pages

I'm blissfully off work today. Just enjoying a quiet day at home. There are some big changes going on and work and it is nice to just forget about it for a while. Also on today's agenda...finish my taxes! Usually I file them around the middle of February because I'm desparate for that refund, but this year the time has gotten away from me and I feel April 15th staring down at me.
