Compassion

Several years ago I read a book by John Douglas, former FBI "profiler". One of the chapters was about a young woman who was brutally murdered while jogging around the army base where she faithfully served. I specifically remember a quote from her father that I found particulary comforting and hopeful (I'm paraphrasing):

God has given all men free will, and having given that gift he will not interfere. He cannot stay the hand nor stop the bullet, but he is there as a source of never ending compassion, understanding and strength...to comfort those who remain and sweep the departed into his loving arms...

As I have dealt with tragedy in my own life and now as we reach out to the people of London it is important to remember that we cannot always stay the hand nor stop the bullet (or bomb) but we can be a never ending source of compassion, understanding and strength to those who lost loved ones.
